What is PCOS?

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal condition affecting women of reproductive age. Symptoms can vary between individuals, however a diagnosis is given when 2-3 of the symptoms below are present:

  • Irregular or absent periods
  • Increased male hormones (commonly testosterone)
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Excessive hair growth
  • Acne
  • Weight gain & difficulty loosing weight

What are the complications of PCOS?

Individuals with PCOS are at a greater risk of developing insulin resistance. Insulin is the hormone responsible for controlling blood sugar levels. Some individuals with PCOS are less sensitive to insulin, which results in the body producing more insulin to achieve the desired effect. As a result PCOS is a risk factor for type 2 diabetes.

In those who experience irregular or absent periods ovulation may not be present causing fertility problems.

How is PCOS treated?

If you are concerned about any of the above PCOS symptoms consult your GP to determine the best way to manage the condition.

Often women are advised and choose to manage the condition through diet and lifestyle. Weight loss is a common first approach for many women as this can improve insulin resistance and regularity of periods. In addition to weight loss dietary changes are advised, women with PCOS benefit from a low carbohydrate, high protein diet.
